Services

We provide the full range of general medical services, minor surgery including minor eye procedures, child health promotion, travel advice and vaccination, anticoagulant monitoring and provide treatment of minor injuries. We offer the full range of contraception choices and provide Sexually Transmitted Infection screening.

Health promotion is an important feature of the practice. Antenatal, NHS health checks, vascular disease, hypertension, asthma and COPD and diabetes clinics are held regularly. Most of these clinics and services are now nurse led.

Wigton Community Ophthalmology Service
Dr Ganga Nair has longstanding experience in Ophthalmology: his initial training was in the Jawaharlal Institute in Pondicherry, India where he gained a Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1993. Dr Nair first worked in the Ophthalmology Department at the Cumberland Infirmary in 1997.

Dr Nair’s clinics provide medical and surgical treatments of many common Ophthalmological problems. If you have any problems or queries regarding this service please contact Lisa Johnson at the surgery.

Travel advice
Please collect a travel form at the reception desk or download it here and complete as fully and accurately as possible. Then return to us and the practice nurse will provide tailor-made advice for your holiday/trip. Please ensure you leave plenty of time before your trip as some vaccinations needs to be given up to 3 months in advance of travelling. There will be a charge for certain vaccines and malaria prescriptions – see Non-NHS Services.

STI screening
This is a service offered for people wanting a “sexual health check-up” and involves a simple blood test and urine test/swab.  Dr De Cornet and Dr Cooper offer this service. Please book a 10-minute appointment with the clinician of your choice.

Coil fitting
Dr De Cornet and Dr Cooper are able to fit coils either as a planned procedure or for emergency contraception. A 10-minute appointment is necessary first to counsel the woman and then plan the correct time for fitting the coil. The coil fitting appointment takes 20-30 minutes and a healthcare assistant will chaperone.

Contraceptive implant
Dr De Cornet and Dr Cooper fit Nexplanon implants for patients. Patients can see any doctor for the initial 10-minute consultation to discuss the implant and plan correct time for fitting. They will then be given a 20-minute appointment with either Dr De Cornet or Dr Cooper for the insertion of the implant.

Baby clinics
A baby clinic is held in the surgery every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 9.30 – 11.30am where you can have your baby weighed and a Health Visitor is on hand to answer any queries you may have.

Minor operations
We offer this service at various times throughout the month. Once you have been listed for an operation by your referring doctor you will receive a letter with an appointment date nearer the time.

Childhood vaccinations
These clinics are run on a Wednesday morning by the practice nurses. You will receive an appointment for your child at the appropriate time, from the children’s health department at Workington. If the appointment is inconvenient please contact the surgery to re-schedule. If your child has a fever then vaccination should be delayed as they will not have an adequate response to the vaccine, in which case please inform the surgery so that vaccination can be re-scheduled.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.

If you have a high temperature, new continuous cough or a loss of, or change in your normal sense of taste or smell please do not attend the surgery.
