Welcome to Wigton Medical Practice

Wigton Medical Practice

Wigton Medical Practice is found centrally in the market town of Wigton on the corner of South End. We have eight doctors working alongside four practice nurses and four healthcare assistants. Following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission on 4th November 2014 the practice was one of the first ten practices in England to be awarded an OUTSTANDING rating and the first in Cumbria.

We are open Monday - Friday 8.00am - 6.30pm. If you have a life threatening medical emergency please dial 999 for an emergency ambulance. If you have an urgent medical problem which cannot wait until the surgery re-opens please dial 111 to access the out of hours service. For more information about the NHS 111 Service please visit our practice info page.

Patients are able to order their repeat prescriptions, book, view, amend and cancel appointments, and view or print summary information from their medical record relating to medications, allergies, adverse reactions and immunisations via Patient Access which is an online service. In order to access this service you need to complete an application to online services form available from the surgery reception. You will then be given a registration letter explaining how to create an account, at this point you will be given a username and asked to create a password which you will use each time to log in. Please note that you will be asked to show proof of ID when handing in an application form.

All GP Practices are now required to provide all their patients with a named GP who has overall responsibility for the care and support that the Practice provides. This does not affect the care each patient receives and patients can continue to see the GP of their choice whenever possible. If you wish to know who your named GP is please ask at Reception.

OUTSTANDING rating for Wigton Group Medical Practice from Care Quality Commission

Care Quality CommissionFollowing a visit from health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on November 4th 2014, Wigton Group Medical Practice has been awarded an outstanding rating. Visits by the CQC to general practices have only been recently introduced. Between October 1st 2014 and 31st March 2016, the CQC will visit and assess all general practices in England. After the visit all practices will receive a rating similar to those awarded to schools following an Ofsted inspection. The practice is one of the first ten in England to receive an outstanding rating and the first in Cumbria.

Senior partner Dr John Honeyman who has worked in Wigton for over thirty years commented: “The GPs and practice staff were absolutely delighted to receive this news following the visit by the CQC. It is particularly rewarding to be recognised for high quality care at a time when general practice is often criticised by politicians and the media. Such negative press can be really quite demoralising.

The foundations of the practice were put in place many years ago by our predecessors. Their vision and drive in establishing the practice in the early 1970s were the foundations for the high quality care that we provide today.

We have a loyal, hard working and committed team who should rightly feel very proud of this accolade. We also have excellent community services in the Solway area. Working together with colleagues in the community means that our patients with both physical and mental health problems can be cared for and supported in their own home.”

Lin Baillie who has been the practice manager since 2001 commented:

"We are all thrilled to be given an outstanding rating. Our team works really hard to provide a high standard of care for patients and this award recognises the efforts of the whole team, including our community and voluntary sector colleagues. Congratulations must also go to our patients who are consistently supportive and appreciative of the service they receive."
